Uccisi a colpi di pistola sparati alla schiena, mentre fuggivano, a bruciapelo, senza possibilità di difendersi. Secondo l’autopsia, sono morti così i 34 minatori sudafricani in sciopero, negli scontri con la polizia, il 16 agosto scorso, alla miniera di Marikana.
“Il rapporto indica che i minatori stavano fuggendo dalla polizia quando sono stati colpiti alle spalle”, riferisce una fonte anonima vicina all’inchiesta, citata dal quotidiano sudafricano The Star. Le autorità si sono rifiutate di rilasciare commenti sulle indiscrezioni ed è tuttora in corso un’inchiesta ad hoc voluta dal presidente sudafricano Jacob Zuma per chiarire la dinamica della strage nella quale sono morti 44 minatori. I poliziotti sostengono la tesi della legittima difesa: “la folla ostile che avanzava verso di noi armati di machete, bastoni e armi da fuoco”.
Circa 3mila minatori, sui 28mila che lavorano nel sito a nord del Sudafrica, hanno iniziato a scioperare il 10 agosto scorso chiedendo aumenti salariali, appoggiati soltanto da una dei due sindacati locali. Dieci uomini, tra cui due poliziotti, sono stati uccisi fra il 10 e il 12 agosto durante gli scontri intersindacali. Pochi giorni dopo, durante un confronto particolarmente teso, la polizia ha aperto il fuoco provocando il massacro.
Oggi, 250 minatori arrestati dopo la sparatoria sono comparsi in tribunale con accuse che vanno dalla violenza pubblica all’omicidio. “Il giorno della sparatoria, la polizia ha iniziato a negoziare con loro fin dal mattino, per chiedergli di posare le armi. Quando si sono rifiutati, si è deciso di disperdere la folla”, ha testimoniato in tribunale il generale di brigata che coordina una delle commissioni d’inchiesta sul massacro. “Non agivano affatto da scioperanti, si muovevano come una formazione militare”, ha aggiunto.
Intanto, la situazione sul fronte dello sciopero rimane tesa. Centinaia di minatori sono pronti a proseguire lo sciopero mentre solo una piccola minoranza è andato a lavorare oggi. “Siamo consapevoli che i dipendenti si aspettano un ambiente sicuro prima di tornare al lavoro”, si legge in un comunicato della Lonmin, la società mineraria britannica che estrae platino a Marikana e che oggi aveva chiesto di riprendere la produzione. “Non lavoriamo, lo sciopero continua”, ha detto per esempio Alfonso Mofokeng, un minatore di Lesotho.
