Bersaglio di una caccia avida e spietata, per salvarsi il rinoceronte africano finirà forse scambiato alla Borsa di Johannesburg. È questa l’ultima disperata idea delle autorità sudafricane, impegnate in una vera e propria guerra contro i bracconieri, che però non stanno vincendo.
Le Forze armate sono dispiegate nel Kruger Park, una delle più vaste riserve naturali d’Africa e la maggiore del Paese, grande quanto la Puglia. Hanno a disposizione le ultime diavolerie tecnologiche, elicotteri, droni con visori notturni, sensori di movimento, cani specialmente addestrati a seguire la pista delle bestie più feroci: gli umani.
L’anno scorso hanno combattuto molte battaglie, catturando 200 bracconieri e uccidendone una trentina in scambi a fuoco. Ma i loro nemici hanno un incentivo irresistibile: destinato ai mercati asiatici, specie quelli vietnamita e cinese, il corno di rinoceronte si vende a oltre 60mila euro il chilogrammo. Il doppio dell’oro. E può pesare 5-6 kg e più, eccezionalmente fino a 10. La manovalanza di questo traffico è reclutata di là dalla frontiera del parco, in Mozambico, Paese che figura al ventesimo posto nella classifica dei più poveri del mondo. La guerra ai rinoceronti non difetta di volontari.
Per questo il dipartimento dell’Ambiente del governo sudafricano, racconta ilMail & Guardian, ha proposto il mese scorso misure straordinarie. Creare allevamenti di rinoceronti bianchi allo scopo di asportarne i corni, per poi venderli in una Borsa creata allo scopo e collegata al Johannesburg Stock Exchange, la maggiore piazza di titoli africana. Insomma legalizzare il commercio dei corni, come si farebbe con la droga, nel tentativo di regolamentarlo, arginando l’ecatombe dei pachidermi. Soltanto nel primo semestre di quest’anno ne sono stati uccisi più di 500, promettendo un nuovo record negativo.
«Togliere il bando al commercio dei corni», è scritto nel rapporto del dipartimento dell’Ambiente, «è secondo alcuni l’alternativa all’inevitabile estinzione dei rinoceronti». La liberalizzazione, ragionano costoro, farebbe crollare il prezzo di mercato dei corni, disincentivando il crimine organizzato.
La proposta non è inaudita,perché è già stata avanzata nel recente passato per l’avorio. Ma come per le zanne d’elefante, anche per i corni di rinoceronte l’idea non convince molti. Per esempio il Wwf, secondoil quale è impossibile prevedere il comportamento del mercato: l’abbassarsi del prezzo potrebbe far aumentare la domanda, dando nuovo stimolo al traffico illecito.
I motivi per i quali si dà la caccia ai corni di rinoceronte sono idioti. In Cina e nel Sud-est asiatico è diffusa la credenza (mai dimostrata scientificamente) che esso esalti la potenza virile. Gli si attribuiscono anche portentosi effetti antitumorali e altre virtù leggendarie. Una superstizione che mette a repentaglio la sopravvivenza di un animale esso sì mitico: un lascito della preistoria, un bestione che supera facilmente le tre tonnellate di peso. La specie più minacciata è il rinoceronte bianco; il rinoceronte nero, più piccolo e agile, più schivo, più scaltro, infinitamente più aggressivo, è maggiormente capace di difendersi dai cacciatori. Sfuggendo o, al bisogno, attaccando. Quanto alle specie asiatiche, esse sono ormai ridotte a poche centinaia di esemplari.
Il Sudafrica è il santuario del Ceratotherium simum e del Diceros bicornis. Nel 2010 ne sono stati censiti 20.711 esemplari, ovvero, secondo le stime, tra il 70 e il 90 per cento della popolazione mondiale. Per questo, grazie anche alla difficoltà di controllarne le frontiere, è anche il maggiore teatro della strage: 668 rinoceronti massacrati nel 2012.
È dal 2009 che il numero delle uccisioni si è impennato. Imotivi sono tre. Primo, l’aumento costante della domanda, effetto del boom economico asiatico e dell’avvento di un nuovo ceto di ricchi in Cina e altrove. Secondo, la creazione di un parco transfrontaliero con Zimbabwe e Mozambico nel 2002: sull’onda dell’entusiasmo, vennero abbattuti centinaia di chilometri di reticolato che delimitavano il confine orientale del Kruger Park: una manna per i bracconieri. Terzo, e decisivo per il salto di qualità, l’entrata in scena del crimine organizzato. Se il Mozambico fornisce la manodopera, la malavita sudafricana, est-europea e asiatica ci mette i capitali: per corrompere guardie di frontiera e ranger, organizzare l’esportazione clandestina servendosi spesso di attività di copertura, e dotare i bracconieri di armi hitech, come l’ambito fucile da caccia Brno CZ 550, prodotto nella Repubblica Ceca.
Per il governo del Sudafrica è «a rischio la sicurezza nazionale ». Il bracconaggio di rinoceronti è stato elevato a «reato prioritario», di cui si occupa la task force anticrimine del ministero dell’Interno. Il numero dei soldati schierati nel parco è stato aumentato, i loro poteri accresciuti. La guerra continua.
