Torna l’incubo della meningite, per di più in un periodo in cui questa infezione non è solita comparire. Ma quest’anno il Veneto, con Toscana e Piemonte, risulta la regione più colpita dall’infezione, stando ai dati forniti dal ministero della Salute. L’ultimo caso si registra all’ospedale di Camposampiero, che ha ricoverato in Rianimazione un 41enne di Villa del Conte colpito da sepsi (infezione del sangue) indotta da meningite da Meningococco. Le sue condizioni sono gravi e la prognosi è riservata.
«Il paziente è arrivato al Pronto soccorso domenica sera, dopo aver consultato la Guardia medica — spiega la dottoressa Anna Pupo, direttore del Servizio di Igiene dell’Usl 15 Alta Padovana —. Accusava febbre alta, vomito e vertigini, sintomi che nel giro di qualche ora si sono aggravati al punto da richiederne il trasferimento in Rianimazione. Purtroppo il decorso della patologia è molto rapido: il batterio non si è fermato in gola ma è penetrato nel cervello e nel sangue, causando la sepsi». La conferma della diagnosi è arrivata il giorno successivo, quando è stato isolato nel sangue del quarantenne il batterio del Meningococco.
L’uomo, operaio impiegato in un’azienda di movimentazione terra, ha contratto l’infezione venendo a contatto con la saliva di soggetti infetti (basta parlare o stare vicini a una persona che starnutisce) e ora il quadro clinico è serio ma stazionario. I medici lo stanno trattando con la terapia antibiotica e confidano in un recupero. Nel frattempo hanno «protetto» con la profilassi (prevede sempre la somministrazione di antibiotici) una decina di persone a contatto stretto con lui negli ultimi giorni. Cioè la madre e la sorella, con cui vive e che domenica l’hanno accompagnato all’ospedale, gli amici e alcuni colleghi di lavoro.
«Purtroppo i ceppi dell’infezione circolano tra la popolazione — avverte la dottoressa Pupo — e l’unico modo di proteggersi è vaccinarsi. Oggi ci sono vaccini per tutte le meningiti batteriche, perciò questo nuovo caso di malattia grave da Meningococco ci esorta ancora una volta a non abbassare la guardia. Tutti i bambini, i ragazzi e le persone affette da patologie croniche devono tutelarsi dai batteri di Menigococco, Pneumococco ed Haemophilus influenzae, che causano meningiti e altre gravi malattie invasive. Quando ci sarà la vaccinazione di massa, i batteri citati spariranno».
Lo stesso messaggio lo lancia il dottor Stefano Formentini, direttore sanitario dell’Usl 15: «Nell’emergenza il sistema sanitario pubblico ha funzionato bene. La diagnosi è stata tempestiva e in casi tanto gravi è vitale non perdere un minuto di tempo. Altrettanto rapida è stata l’informativa alla Regione e al ministero della Salute inviata dal nostro Ufficio d’Igiene, che contestualmente ha predisposto la profilassi per tutti i soggetti vicini al paziente, in modo da evitare nuovi contagi. Purtroppo le malattie infettive non sono scomparse e l’unico strumento per prevenirle è il vaccino. Oggi i sieri sono sicuri ed efficaci. Per bambini e categorie a rischio, cioè pazienti cronici, oncologici e immunodepressi, sono gratis. Gli altri cittadini — aggiunge il direttore sanitario — possono richiederli al proprio medico di famiglia o direttamente all’Ufficio d’Igiene dell’Usl di riferimento».
Se non diagnosticata subito e trattata per tempo, la meningite può portare alla morte o causare danni neurologici. Il 41enne ricoverato a Camposampiero non è un malato cronico nè immunodepresso, quindi è stato particolarmente sfortunato, ma il suo contagio è la testimonianza più diretta della forza di queste infezioni. Che possono colpire chiunque e in qualsiasi momento, nonostante per le meningiti il periodo maggiormente a rischio sia di solito individuato tra gennaio e febbraio.
